Subscribers to Verizon Wireless' V CAST service and Verizon's nascent cable service might be able to watch some YouTube videos, according to a Reuters article.
YouTube and Verizon are in discussions, but no agreement has been announced, according to the article.
The article says "some" videos so I assume subscribers won't be able to view every video, either on V CAST or video on demand via Verizon cable.
Exclusivity
Of course, since most of YouTube's videos are awful, it will be interesting to see how YouTube and Verizon intend to select what's offered, assuming an agreement is reached.
The article also says Verizon might be able to get an exclusive for some period of time, giving it a competitive advantage over other cellular operators and, perhaps, cable companies.
I certainly can see some mobile television subscribers being interested in downloading YouTube videos. And, any deal would generate a great deal of publicity.
Sparking other alliances
However, there are so many opportunities for offering mobile TV programs -- whether its broadcasting live shows or cellular-only programs -- that I don't see a YouTube/Verizon tie-up as a "killer" deal for mobile TV.
Such a deal, though, is likely to spark other cellular operators to forge alliances with other user-generated video sites.
