In what’s a definite sign of the changing times in wireless multimedia, Verizon Wireless has announced a “fall lineup” for its streaming V Cast Mobile TV, Verizon’s press release says.
Who would have thought that a cellular operator would be crowing about a television lineup as a part of its services?
The press release says, “More than 10 new fall shows are scheduled to debut on V Cast Mobile TV at the same time as they air on traditional TV. Brand new shows available on V Cast Mobile TV include ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Viva Laughlin’ on CBS Mobile; ‘K-VILLE’ and ‘Back to You’ on Fox Mobile; ‘Bionic Woman’ and ‘Life’ on NBC 2Go; and from MTV Networks, ‘iCarly’ on Nickelodeon and ‘Kaya’ on MTV.”
MediaFLO
V Cast Mobile TV is based on Qualcomm’s MediaFLO system. The service has eight channels: CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC2Go, NBC News2Go and Nickelodeon.
Verizon’s mobile TV application is available in more than 30 markets. It is not available, unfortunately, in my area of Washington, D.C.
Washington is often one of the first markets to get new wireless technologies, such as CDMA 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO. However, Qualcomm is continuing to negotiate with UHF TV stations holding licenses on channel 55 to utilize those channels for MediaFLO.
