Qualcomm MediaFLO has signed an agreement to license patents associated with Gemstar-TV Guide’s interactive program guide, according to the press release.
This is Gemstar-TV Guide’s first patent license agreement for mobile television in the United States, the company says.
The release has precious few details but perhaps this enables MediaFLO to offer the on-screen guides to other cellular operators. Verizon Wireless already offers a “TV Guide” for its streaming V Cast Mobile TV service and I discussed it in an article I wrote in August for “Mobi-lize.”
I discussed this previously — and also mentioned it to TV Guide — that Gemstar-TV Guide is perfectly positioned to establish a major presence in the mobile TV space with news, reviews, weblogs, etc. on its Web site. So far, though, the company hasn’t done anything in this space. I guess it doesn’t see sufficient revenue-generating opportunities.
