Mobile content aggregator Airborne Entertainment has begun offering its first originally produced mobile television program, “Bitchin’ Kitchen,” (see left) that recently debuted on Verizon Wireless’ on-demand video offerings, according to Airborne’s press release. The new show is part of Airborne’s Videotic mobile channel.
The 60– to 90–second Bitchin’ Kitchen episodes feature Nadia G. “who takes mobile viewers on a whirlwind tour of her unconventional kitchen and her even more unconventional edible treats,” Airborne’s release says. “She takes a tongue-in-cheek look at today’s squeaky-clean cooking shows, and throws together (real!) theme-based recipes for real-life situations, such as ‘One Night Stand Breakfast’ and ‘Single-Life Salmon.’”
I’ll have to check it out on one of my Verizon test handsets.
Why can’t I view it?
Okay, so why can’t I see a clip of Bitchin’ Kitchen on either the Airborne or Verizon Web site?
This is one of the things that’s wrong with the way mobile TV is marketed, and it makes me angry. There are relatively few video clips for consumers to preview.
Previewing mobile TV programs is especially important when the programs are exclusive to cellular. If mobile TV programs are the same as on regular cable/broadcast TV, such as MSNBC, Fox News, C-SPAN and C-SPAN-2 that are on Sprint TV, there is much less need for people to see previews because there’s a good chance they already are at least somewhat familiar with the shows.
Boo
But who knows what Bitchin’ Kitchen is, except by reading the press release? Indeed, Airborne has highlighted in e-mail of the press release sent to me that this is the company’s first self-produced video series.
I understand that Verizon is a huge, bureaucratic company that takes a long time to do just about anything. But Airborne certainly can move faster and understands the power of marketing.
Even with digital rights management and other issues, there’s no reason Airborne shouldn’t post a clip of Bitchin’ Kitchin, whether it’s the entire episode or, say, 30 seconds.
So boo on Airborne Entertainment and Verizon for not posting a clip on their Web sites.
Hello Nadia G,
Thanks very much for the comment and the link; I appreciate the info. I'd glad to see there's a good Bitchin' Kitchen site. Lots of interesting stuff on it.
But (a): Might it not be a good idea to add a "Mobile" navigation bar on the Wev site that includes information about Bitchin' Kitchen on, well, mobile TV? (Unless I missed it.)
And, but (b) I still maintain that:
(1) Airborne should have posted at least one clip on its site or, at the very least, included the URL for Bitchin' Kitchen in the press release, and
(2) Cellular operators, such as Verizon, need to do a much better job of providing clips of mobile TV programs. Including a link to the appropriate site, such as to Bitchin' Kitchen, wouldn't be a bad idea, either, for Verizon and other cellular operators who offer mobile TV programs that have Web sites.
