Shortly after I wrote about Qik, that enables live streaming of video from camera phones, I learn about FlixWagon that seems to do the same thing (see below).
Both NewTeeVee and TechCrunch write about FlixWagon, that is handing out invitations to a select few to test the product that’s still in alpha testing. NewTeeVee says FlixWagon appears similar to Qik, but is promoting better video quality and compatibility with more cellular phones.
Qik versus FlixWagon
Roi Carthy of TechCrunch says FlixWagon is compatible with Nokia and Sony Ericsson cellular phones that incorporate Symbian and J2ME. Carthy says he viewed videos from the same phone uploaded to FlixWagon and Qik and thinks the quality is superior to Qik’s.
“This was true both in video clarity and its ability to deal with movement — quality was degraded substantially on Qik when the handset was moved even slightly. FlixWagon is claiming that this is due to the emphasis it places on ensuring that a user never loses a second of broadcast, even in the most challenging conditions inherent to mobile environments.
“For example, if a user goes into an elevator, basement, or loses reception for any reason, the broadcast will resume when reception is back and the full video will be stored and available for later viewing.”
TechCrunch says FlixWagon has partnered with MTV in Israel to allow reporters and other users to upload videos to an MTV social networking site.
Live versus archived
Although there are many Web sites for uploading videos, during the past 12 months or so we’ve seen the development of several sites for live streaming video from camera phones. This is just the start, and the ability of anyone to transmit live video from their phones is, as I’ve written previously, going to be revolutionary.
