WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C. is providing live television broadcasts over Sprint TV’s “My Local TV” channel, according to the press release.
Using technology from News Over Wireless (NOW), that helps local TV stations configure programs for mobile TV, WRAL will stream live such programs as breaking news and weather reports. The first live broadcast was WRAL lighting its tower with Christmas lights.
I’ve watched “My Local TV,” that features on-demand videos by a few dozen local stations across the country. So now WRAL and, eventually, other stations on “My Local TV,” will be able to provide live news.
Importance of on-demand + live
Although lighting Christmas lights isn’t the most momentous news event, it’s a harbinger of important news stories that can be transmitted live. I like “My Local TV” because I like to watch what’s happening in other cities while I’m on the go, but on-demand videos aren’t the same, obviously, as live streaming.
I’ve written many times that the future of mobile TV is a combination of both on-demand and live streaming programs. Sprint offers several live channels, including Fox News, Bloomberg and C-SPAN.
i wrote a two-part article about NOW on November 2 and November 16 for the mobile video/mobile TV Web site, Mobi-lize.
