Student getting computing Ph.D with mobile TV thesis, hardware prototypes

ChengHsin Hsu will receive his doctorate this semester from Canada’s Simon Fraser University with his thesis, “Maximizing Streaming Quality for Heterogeneous and Mobile Receivers” combined with his prototypes of mobile television base stations and receivers, the University says.

“Hsu has helped design algorithms that enable various types of mobile communication devices to receive concurrently, via wireless technology, a multitude of programming channels from commercial broadcast networks.  The algorithms enable the receiving devices to quickly render incoming programming in the most appropriate format for ensuring optimal video viewing quality on those devices,” according to the University.

He has published 16 papers, won awards and wants to get a job in mobile TV.  Anyone interested in hiring him?

CBS Wireless seeks director of mobile video

More and more I'm seeing help wanted advertisements seeking people who are experts in mobile television -- either as part of an overall digital media/wireless position or specifically for mobile TV.

CBS Wireless (that name itself is an indication!) is looking for a "director mobile video."

Here's what you have to do:

*  Manage entire mobile video operations: Detailed project management and continuous striving to make CBS the creative leader in this new space

*  Design, implement and document efficient processes for mobile video production across carriers and MVNO’s                  

*  Implement QA procedures                   

*  Manage camera teams                     

*  Develop deep insight for CBS into what consumers want in mobile video                        

*  Work with partners across CBS, The CW and Paramount Television to acquire video content and turn it into exciting wireless experiences

*  Develop cross-links from mobile video to internet and TV shows and vice versa                           

*  Coordinate approval processes, both internal and external (Standards, Legal, Creative, Development, Technology)

I like the job myself!  However, you have to be an expert in "TV show development."

Fox Cable seeks Fuel TV director of new media, with mobile tie-in

Fox Cable Networks is looking for a director of new media for its Fuel TV (see below) channel and mobile television is part of the responsibilities.

An employment ad in the New York Post says the director will "oversee and manage day-to-day operations associated with all non-linear network businesses including Internet and digital distribution, On Demand (cable VOD and PVR applications for satellite distributors), interactive television, broadband and wireless applications (wireless video, Fuel TV mobile offerings etc.)."

Fuel TV's mobile business includes "edgy" sports videos (lots of skateboarding and skiboarding) under Sprint's sports category as well as selling wallpaper for cellular phones.  Fox also provides a live 24-hour feed for Fox News as well as many individual Fox Sports videos

Mobile experience

I don't make a habit of posting mobile TV jobs -- although perhaps I should sell space on my weblog for employment ads! -- but I'm just highlighting how mainstream broadcasters are increasingly seeking candidates with mobile experience.

Also, broadcast engineers with mobile experience seem to be in demand.

Verizon seeks mobile TV marketing manager to focus on MediaFLO

From paidContent.org I see Verizon Wireless is seeking a marketing manager for video content and programming to focus on "generating demand for our MediaFLO and developing cross-promotion plans with content providers....

"This person will be our day-to-day contact with Qualcomm and Content Providers and oversee all aspects of our 'Basic' content operations once launched."

The job is headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J.
